Alumni of (Albert H. Anderson, Simon G. Atkins, Carver High and John W. Paisley) organized by the Anderson Class of 1967 to reunite all classmates to keep the spirit of the Four Historically Black High Schools alive. On October 28, 1995 this vision came to fruition with a celebratory reunion that is held annually with a rotation of the host school in alphabetical order and governed by an Alumni Executive Committee consisting of six representatives from each school.
The Big 4 Choir was organized in 1998 by Two Paisley Alumni Carolyn Hampton and Georgia Smith , the first Church Service was organized for Paisley’s Celebration of the Big 4. There were only ten members, all whom were women. Our first director was Belinda Daniels and minister of music, Walteria Spaulding. The late Twana-Southerland-Gilliam was the director of the choir for a short time, followed by David Allen for a brief period. Later Mr. Eddie Bines became our director. The Big 4 Choir grew to over 100 plus members.
The Big 4 Choir is comprised of voices from the four high schools along with family and friends that would get together once a year to sing for each reunion weekend. Embraced throughout the city and surrounding areas, many did not want to wait for the next year’s reunion celebration, so in 2006 some members decided to stay together meeting each month for rehearsals at various churches and began to minister throughout the entire year at several churches, schools and other community events. Held annually in October at various churches for the past 18 years the choir has rendered the musical element for the Big 4 Worship Service as the kickoff night to lift up the name of Jesus which sets the tone for a fantastic three day event while enjoying the camaraderie of classmates, family and friends.
With God as the ultimate leader, it is he that keeps this anointed outreach ministry in great demand by giving a gift of song to share creating a cohesive coalition for the sole purpose of “Winning Souls for Christ” also to encourage and help those that are burden down. With 100 plus voices utilizing their unique gifts and talents, this choir is currently under the extraordinary musical direction of Mr. Eddie M. Bines, Jr., along with his dynamic musical staff the G.A.P. Band (God’s Anointed Players) sharing individual messages of inspiration with one another and other community friends the matchless name of Jesus Christ and all of his goodness.
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.” Psalm 133:1
